Vintage Cellar Wine Tasting 3/17

Gen 5 Sauvignon (2009) $11.95
This wine comes from the Lodi region of California and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage Cellar description- 92 points ('09), Wilfred Wong: "Taking Lodi into a whole new level, the finely-tuned '09 Gen 5 Cabernet shows intricate and complex flavors; ripe for sure, yet classy and refined; long finish."
My description- This wine smelled of tobacco, with hints of darker fruits.  When tasting the wine there were more hints of spice that came through on the palate.  There were still detectable hints of fruit and tobacco, which provided balance to the wine.

Palo Negro  Cabernet Sauvignon (2010) $7.95
This wine comes from the Mendoza region of Argentina and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage Cellar description- Toasty and forward, with rounded currant and plum fruit backed by more toast. A long sustained finish.  Definite quality for a outstanding price.
My description-  This wine also smelled of dark fruits, similar to the Gen 5.  This wine was very smooth on the palate, with a nice mix of tannins.  The taste did linger on the palate, making it seem a little sticky which was a bit odd.  However, this wine was not aged in oak which was interesting to learn.

Lamadrid Malbec Rose (2010) $10.95
This wine also comes from the Mendoza region of Argentina and is 100% Malbec
Vintage Cellar description- Tobacco and black cherry nose; real dark cherry sweet tarts flavors in the mouth; medium body, a touch spicy in the mouth, fairly simple, appealing, dark rose.
My description- This wine smelled like spices and fruit, particularly cherries.  This was a very smooth wine with a nice tannic structure.  The cherry hints in the aroma really opened on the palate, which was a nice element of the wine.

Gen 5 Chardonnay (2010) $11.95
This wine also comes from the Lodi region of California and is comprised on Chardonnay grapes.
Vintage Cellar description- Superbly crafted, the nifty and poised '09 Gen 5 Chardonnay drinks incredibly easily; ripe and fruit-forward with excellent balance; rounded finish.
My description- This wine had a pretty floral smell.  There were also aromas of crisp fruit.  The taste of the wine was slightly tart and had hints of melon.  It was a smooth wine, which was very clean across the palate.

Trinca Espinhas Branco Vinho Verde (2010) $9.95
This wine comes from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal.  It is 50% Alvarinho and 50% Trajadura.
Vintage Cellar description- Pleasant and mellow, this young white wine will be the perfect accompaniment to all kinds of seafood, salads, mild cheeses, as an aperitif or just by itself. The alcohol content of Famega is 9.5% which makes it the ideal natural low calorie white wine. The grapes used in making Famega are 100% Alvarinho (same as the Albarino grape over the border in northwest Spain).
My description- This wine had a very floral smell.  When tasting this wine I could sense hints of green apple.  It was a very tart, crisp wine.  There was a bit of an alcohol bite at the end, but overall it was very refreshing.
